I think that Louis C.K. is completley correct when he says that we, the younger generation, take all the marvels of the new technological era for granted. I think that this especially applies to people like me and other people born in first world countries like Canada. We just don't realise how amazing it is to even have electricity available to us every hour of the day.
I assume that almost everyone in our grade was born in 1993. I ask everyone now to remember that time. It wasn't really that long ago, only 16 years. If you were poor like me it was called a walkman, and it played music on these things called tapes that you'd actually have to rewind yourself and flip over to hear all the songs. Oh, you'll get a kick out of this, the tape could only hold 90 minutes worth of songs! That's only an hour and a half of fast forwarding to skip songs, guess-timating where a song begins or ends, and then rewinding to listen again!
Then when I wanted to watch a movie we had to pull out these big clunky things called a VHS and put it into a VCR. Sometimes it would take more than one VHS to hold a movie (see Titanic as a reference) and even worse sometimes a VCR would chew the magnetic tape of the VHS and then you'd have to spend hours trying to carefully pull it out without running the tape! If you could manage getting it out without destroying the tape then your video would have some weird static like thing on the part that had been chewed up!
Oh and let's not forget that we were all playing on the N64 and PlayStation with games that could only support 32-bit graphics! Here are some of the better examples...

(REMEMBER THAT THESE ARE PRE-RENDERED GRAPHICS)
Compare those to these...

Alright, seriously now. I think back to when I was little. I used to be stuck in the same place for hours on end and I didn't have a Nintendo DS or an iPod Touch. I had my good old imagination, occasionally a pencil and paper too. I had to make up stories to entertain myself until I got my first portable game system (Game Boy Colour for the win!) If anyone reading this thinks that was bad let's not start about what my elder siblings and my parents had to do back in India!
My parents and siblings would have the electricity in all of Calcutta shut off after 6 pm. They only had one television and even then there was only one channel that played only one show (which for everyone's information was Spiderman). They had never even been near an airplane before they came to Canada. To them seeing things like Tamogatchis, Sony Walkmans, and televisions with more than one channel were amazing.
So thinking about my childhood and theirs I think that we have good reason to complain when we hear my little brother complain that he doesn't have a DS or that the digital cable isn't working for an hour. I think that we have even more reason to get annoyed when we hear people say that they're bored. Really if you can't entertain yourself with electronic aid there is something wrong with you.
I admit that I use every single piece of tech that I can get my hands on everyday, but that's only because I really do marvel at it and want to enjoy it to its fullest. In fact I even want to be part of the process that creates new tech for the future even though I know that in a few months after it's released any software I will have created will be deemed "out dated" and possibly "obsolete".
I have only one thing to say about this whole predicament: disheartening.

You actually put the N64 Link picture there?! OH no you di'nt. Well yeah when you compare two kinds of technology *ahem* video game sequals on more powerful systems you see that they leave the fun in there. I know I'm talking mainly about video games, but the point is the new generation sees the old as boring. This goes for everything form TV shows... to yes Video games. Anyways, awesome job Sasha! :D
Yes, those were the good ol' days. I loved watching VHS tapes and then DVDs came a few years later. What an improvement! However, there were the occasional scratches and lags. As for tapes, I enjoyed using that too. Just that the sound quality was really staticky.
I think if we had the 6pm rule here, life would be much easier and simpler. You know, so we can actually do some physical activites outside as opposed to in front of the TV.
Nice blog post! (:
Ah yes, the good ol' days of really bad graphics and bad quality movies. I remember that. Actually, I still have a large bag of VHS's somewhere in my house...I should probably go find it.
I agree that we're so spoiled when it comes to technology, how we want this and we 'need' that. I like how you see the truth behind our always-evolving technology, and how things become obsolete so fast. But how else would industries make any profit?
Great points.
Our generation really does need to be more positive about the whole advanced technology thing! I mean, we've got it all.
The VHS/ Tape points were a real throwback! I hate guessing because I'd never get it right! hahaha.
And of course, the worst was when it ate your tape...sad really.
I love technology and all our cool toys now, I wouldn't wanna live in any other time when it comes to accessibility. (:
