Eccentrick!

Eccentrick! - The Art Show

So another year is almost done, students are scrambling to complete their final units (and of course I'm one of them!), areas are becoming jam packed with last minute workers (or as we like to be known: "those who work well under tight deadlines/immense pressure"), etc...But of course instead of helping us out here, the annual hinderance of the Mary Ward Art show pops up and closes down most of the school's basement for a little longer than a week. Now, don't get me wrong, though the art show bothers me when I'm trying to hand in units in the courses which I'm always behind in (my art ones) it gives me an excellent excuse at TA interviews as to why I'm behind. So thank you for the vital service that you provide us Mary Ward Art Show, we procrastinators who take art and tech courses semi-salute you for now.

Okay so let me get on to my actual opinions about the art show. Let's start with the theme. Eccentrick...wait no that's wrong it's “ECCENTRICK!” because as someone once told me it just doesn't have the same flair without the caps lock on and the exclamation point at the end. To this theme I throw a vegetable bouquet. Half because it really was an innovative theme, there are so many things that can be explored that fall under the title of "eccentric". The other half of me though wants to just hit it with some vegetables. Honestly, I didn't see the eccentricities in some of the pieces that were on display. Trust me, I will always applaud the art students, the art show is probably the most traumatic, dramatic, and dreadful time for them. The constant work that is needed to create something that could even slightly resembles the master piece that goes through your head in the beginning stages of development is just awe inspiring.

Okay wait, I think that I’m going about this in a wrong way. Let’s start by pointing out certain things that I really did like. For example everyone should have seen the large yellow and red painting that still sits in Comm Tech! That was amazing! Colouring in the shadows to make the girl and actually being able to pull it off well! I remember back last year when I tried my hand at negative space…that was an excellent misadventure. Also, it was my style. Big, in a slightly cartoony fashion, big, red, and did I forget to mention big? I like oversized things.

Anyway, I’m going to skip over the negative side since I think that my previous paragraphs give a decent enough explanation of my feelings towards the art show. Alright, now I don’t know how to end off without everyone hating me so here it goes:

To summarize, the art show bothers me.
The life of every single art and tech student revolves around it.
It closes down the basement departments, and blocks access from
the library stairwell.
It also gives ample opportunity for students to become overwhelmingly
stressed, and panicky.
It could ruin their self-esteem to have their art work (which is like a part of their soul on display)
scrutinized by people who don’t understand it.
At the same time as I dislike it, I love the art show just for the fact that it is the MW Art Show!
You can’t hate the Art show, but then again you don’t have to love it.
It's like Big Brother in 1984, you love it so much that it kills you.

P.S. This is my sixth blogpost! (technically that means that I’m done the unit!) I’m going to aim for a layout update and weekly comics to keep going though. Thinking about starting a sprite comic. Starting now!
